Obituary for Verna Hayes

Hayes, Verna

The large extended family of Verna Marie Hayes lovingly bade her goodnight on March 13th, 2018 at Macassa Lodge, in her 97th year. Verna was the daughter of Thomas and Lucille Hayes(Greenlee), predeceased by her siblings, Marion Clancy (Bernard), James Hayes (Edith Lynch), Lucille Hennessey-Radigan (Gerard)(Joseph). She is survived by her brother Murray of Burlington and his wife Pat. Verna was a fiercely independent career oriented woman who always let it be known she was " single by choice, not by chance.” She spent many years as a loyal employee with the Canada Revenue Tax Department and later, ran a tight ship at the Trane Company where she remained until her retirement. At Trane she met a life long friend in Jamie McMillian, who shared her sense of humour and enjoying life to the fullest. His kindness and thoughtfulness of Verna's well being as she aged did not waver. We lovingly remember Verna’s quick wit, humour, curiosity and fearlessness in sharing her opinions, leaving a legacy of story telling for her 22 nieces and nephews and their families. Verna's generosity was abundant, attending all birthdays, baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations, bridal and baby showers. She was also a constant companion to her mother for many years. Verna's interests were many to name a few; A loyal fan of the Hamilton Ti-cat (holding season tickets for many years), a founding member of the Dundas Valley Curling Club, volunteering for Theatre Aquarius, an active member of St. Joseph's parish and later St. Charles Garnier, travelling and spending summers at Sauble Beach. Once Verna moved to Macassa, she showed her 'true spirit'- adapting quickly, making friends, attending socials and especially enjoying the recreational program 'brain games'. As an avid reader she enjoyed the library delivery service and family supply of books. The wonderful staff of E-1 at Macassa Lodge, Catherine Ormond (SW), and Lydia Gallant (intake), we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your exceptional care. Verna was also well aware and appreciative of her own special 'Niece/Angel/Wine stocker', Kathy Nicol, who enhanced Verna's life to the end, and this large extended family thanks Kathy too! Visitation will be held at P.X. DERMODY FUNERAL HOME (7 East Ave. S.) on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. with a Funeral Mass to follow at St. Charles Garnier Parish (129 Hughson St. S.) at 1 p.m. Cremation to follow. A private family burial will be held at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the M.S. Society Ham/Halton Chapter or a charity of choice would be appreciated by the family.
