Obituary for Sister Margaret Volk

VOLK, Sister Margaret, (formerly Sister Frances Clare), School Sister of Notre Dame

Died at Notre Dame Convent, Waterdown, Ontario on January 7, 2019 at the age of 89 and in the 72nd year as a School Sister of Notre Dame. Predeceased by her parents Michael and Margaret (Schmidt) Volk, her brothers Ralph and Wilfred and her sister, Helen Rothe. Fondly remembered by the members of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, her brothers, Edward, Donald and Arnold and her sister Carol Ryan.

Sister Margaret was a devoted homemaker for communities in Kitchener, Cambridge, Hamilton and Salt Lake, Saskatchewan, her home province. In preparation for caring for pre-school children at St. Agatha Orphanage, in 1951 Sister Margaret took a course in Pre-School Education at the Institute of Child Study at the University of Toronto. When Notre Dame College, Waterloo opened in 1961 Sister Margaret was engaged in various housekeeping tasks at the women’s residence. Her “green thumb” added to the homey atmosphere for the residents. In 1966 she moved to Waterdown, where she assisted with the boarders at Notre Dame Academy. Following a year of study at Gonzaga University, Spokane, Washington, Sister Margaret returned to Waterdown, where she was in charge of the boarders’ dining room at Notre Dame Academy. Beginning in 1980 Sister Margaret became involved in pastoral care, visiting the sick and elderly in Newmarket, in Unity and Regina, Saskatchewan, and in Edmonton, Alberta. On returning to Ontario in 2000, Sister Margaret continued visiting senior residences and the hospital in Kenora. She also volunteered at the noon hour soup kitchen called Agape Table.Then in 2005 Sister Margaret moved to Notre Dame Convent, Waterdown.

Visitors will be received at Notre Dame Convent on Thursday, January 10 from 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-8:00pm. Prayer service will be held on Thursday afternoon at 3:00pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 11 at Notre Dame Convent at 10:30am. Interment at Notre Dame Convent Cemetery.
