Obituary for Paul Frederick Burt

Paul Frederick Burt
BURT, Paul Frederick

With broken hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and Papa, Paul Frederick Burt, peacefully at home with his loving family at his side, on Thursday September 6, 2018 in his 74TH year. He leaves behind the love of his life, his wife Cecilia. They met in 1959 Dad always said he got Mum “right off the boat from Scotland” They were married four years later in 1963, making him, in his words, “the luckiest man in the world.” Paul and Cecilia celebrated their 55th anniversary July 13 this year.

He will be forever missed by his adoring children Paul Jr and his wife Selbina, his devoted daughter Lisa, and his “best buddy” Shaun. Being a Papa was Paul’s pride and joy. You could always count on Papa to be there at games, plays, performances and birthdays. The motto around the house was if anything was broken Papa would fix it. Missing Papa so much are his grandchildren Liam, Abigail, Claire, Gillian, Mark, Joshua, Monica, Annelise and our baby angel Tessa above. They will keep these memories of their Papa alive for them in the coming years.

Paul will be greatly missed by his only sibling, his brother David and his wife Ansima, and his much loved sister and brother-in-law, Annette and Joe Spatazzo. Sadly missed by his nephew and Godson John Spatazzo and his wife Lynne, Noah and Wesley, niece Michelle Bradley (Scott)

Dad started an apprenticeship with Dynes Electric at the tender age of 15, to help his family financially. He was a skilled electrician and Instrumentation Control Technician working much of that time in construction including Nanticoke, MacMaster University, and MUMC He then decided on a career change. He enrolled at Queen’s University and earned a secondary school teaching certificate. From the late 1980’s he taught for the HWCDSB. As a teacher, Dad loved to pass his knowledge and passion for quality work on to his students.

Over the years Paul renovated almost a dozen houses, including their beautiful family home. He generously helped friends and family on their home improvement projects too. He was a Master of multiple trades and his work ethic and dedication was unmatched.

Dad was everything you would want in a father, his family always came first: he coached our teams, was always at every game or activity whether it was hockey, lacrosse, ringette, performances and plays. He always told us how proud of us he was and how much he loved us. He always said just have fun and treat others the way you would want to be treated.
Dad was endlessly patient, always listened, never judgmental. We had great vacations in our Prowler Trailer and later our Funcraft Van, and went to every province in Canada. He loved our Country. It was crazy times: imagine no cell phone or DVD, no movies and no air conditioner in the car, but we had great fun.

For years Dad was an avid scuba diver and diving instructor
Tobermory was our yearly camping trip for all the check-out dives. The Scuba diving trip to Hawaii was a trip of a lifetime. Later in life, golf took over as his passion: despite the chronic pain from Psoriatic Arthritis he mustered on. Oh the joy when he hit under 80 (He once got a hole in one and was overjoyed until he realized he had to buy a round back at the clubhouse, but with pleasure!) Saturday morning volleyball at Sackville; 10 pin bowling; darts at the Legion; swimming at Hill Park 3 times a week to keep his joints mobile. Paul was also an avid reader, a baritone singer, a great dancer, pool table hot shot, a past reader at Sts. Peter and Paul Parish.

We are so grateful to Paul’s lifelong buddies and teammates for their daily or weekly visits. Thank you, Pat (best peanut butter cookies ever!) Grant, Billy, Joe, Mike, Bob. To our wonderful neighbours for all support and goodies. A special thanks from Cecilia to her amazingly strong female friends who were with her on a daily basis: Bev always there for 58 years, Liz, Anna Barb, and Dorothy your amazing meals and apple sauce. You all went above and beyond. Cathie without your love, strength and guidance it would have been unbearable. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Since his diagnosis in April 2017, Paul has never uttered one word of anger or bitterness over this cancer. He never regained his strength from the radical surgery at the Princess Margaret Hospital when he came home he was bedridden for 14 months. His courage and dignity and unquenchable sense of humour, helped all of us through this most difficult year as a family. He truly is a good guy, a gentleman, our Hero. Knowing Paul he probably has oiled up the Pearly Gates by now. Love him, sweet Jesus, as we did. God Bless you my love until we meet again.

Our family wishes to express our gratitude to wonderful people: Dr.Hadcock (best family doctor ever). Dr. Finley, Dr. Ellis, Dr Wang, Dr. Deperrot, Dr. Donahue, Princess Margaret Hospital. Extra special thanks to the Good Shepherd Palliative Care Outreach Team: Dr Tony Kerigan, Sandy our nurse, our PSW’s from Bayshore: Edna, Justina, and Jillianna. Your compassion and love for Paul was so evident in the daily care you gave him. Thank you so much for everything.

Cremation has taken place. An opportunity to greet the family and celebrate Paul’s life will be held at the PX DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 796 Upper Gage Ave., Hamilton, on Saturday, September 15th 2018, from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm with refreshments, and a sharing of memories at 4:30 p.m. Special thanks to Paul Dermody and Stephanie Mayot.
