Obituary for Gerda Roseneck

Gerda Roseneck
Roseneck, Gerda

Passed away peacefully on July 23, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton in her 92nd year. Gerda was
predeceased by her husband Walter in 1969 and by her siblings Erwin, Helmut and Annelie in Germany. Gerda
will be dearly missed by her daughter Ursula Steiger (Don Vail), son Herb Roseneck (Jennifer Creeden), her four
towering grandsons Adam (Jennifer), Aaron, Kyle (Renee), Kurt (Michelle) and great-grandsons Everett, Henrik,
Francis and Nolan Roseneck to whom she will always be fondly remembered as “Oma”, Linda Roseneck, Thomas
Steiger, the Peternel family, as well as many special nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends and neighbours in Canada
and Germany.

Gerda & Walter came to Canada in 1954 and founded the Rose Corner Bakery & Coffee Shop on James St N
where everyone knew her as “Rose”. In 1965 they bought European Fashion Shoes on King St E where Gerda
was the “Shoe Lady” to thousands of loyal customers and friends for the next 25 years until she retired. On the
door of the back room of the shoe store was a sign which read “Gerda’s Lunch Room”. All who visited Gerda
there or at her home weren’t permitted to leave without Kaffee, Kuchen, a lovingly garnished lunch, a piece of
dark chocolate or some other manifestation of her industrious hospitality.

Gerda was a member of St. John’s German Lutheran church for more than sixty years and particularly enjoyed
her visits from Pastor Daniela.

Thanks to all the staff on the 5 th and 6 th floors at St. Joseph’s Hospital as well as to family members and special
caregivers Michelle, Lucrecia, Anne and Margaret who lovingly supported Gerda’s dignity and grace in her final
months.

Gerda vigorously lived her motto “If you rest, you rust!” tending to her beloved home and gardens. If Heaven
has a garden our Gerda won’t be resting any time soon!

Visitation will be held at P.X. DERMODY FUNERAL HOME (1919 King St E.) on Thursday, July 26, 2018 from 2-4pm
and 7-9pm. A Funeral Service will be held in the funeral home chapel on July 27, 2018 at 10 a.m. Burial to follow
at Woodland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. John’s Lutheran Church or to the CNIB would be greatly appreciated.
