Obituary for Joseph Edward Dove

Dove, Joseph Edward (1933-2018)

With his family at his side, and the love and prayers of others close to him, Ed died peacefully of lung cancer at St. Peter’s Palliative Care. He dealt with his illness as usual, with determination and Yorkshire wit, enjoying ice cream and bantering with his roommates till the last day. Ed was husband for 62 years to Lucy (nee Rudzki), who predeceased him in 2015. Very Proud Dad of David (Bruna), who also predeceased him in 2015, and Gary (Linda). Loving and generous Grandpa to Mike (Cheryl), Brendan, and Brian Dove. Excited “GGPops” to great granddaughters Jenna & Julia Dove. Ed is also survived by his sister Rita (spouse Tom Bland), sister Margaret Doreen Bailey (Russ predeceased) and sister in law Cath Dove, sister in law Tillie Tozer, cousin Joe Bass. He is predeceased by his parents Rose and Harold Dove, sister Irene Cherniuk and spouse Bill, brother Harold Dove. He was “Uncle Eddie” to nieces and nephews from BC, Alberta, Ontario, England, and the USA, some of whom have gone before him. After Lucy’s illness Ed found friendship with neighbours Len, Kevin & families, as well as his church family, especially Frank & Betty Tapuska and Jeannine with whom he had Sunday Bunch weekly. Ed was a determined man who directed and planned his life as he wanted. He loved church, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, beer, and butter pecan ice cream. We’ll remember his faithful support of hockey and soccer games, his homemade mince tarts and hermits at Christmas too. He enjoyed years of sun and sand at Madeira Beach Florida, including a last trip in 2014. Ed was born in Hamilton, but returned to England at age 2, enduring a bout of polio, WWII and evacuation from his home – he never forgot this. Back in Ontario at age 16, he worked for the American Can Company for 40 years and enjoyed a long retirement. Ed stayed his last few weeks first in Muskoka with son Gary and family, then at St. Peter’s Palliative Unit. As a family we cannot express enough our deep gratitude for the excellent medical and nursing care Pop received. Our thanks to St. Joe’s lung clinic, Juravinski Cancer Centre, CCAC Palliative teams in Hamilton & Muskoka. Our special thanks to Drs. Deb Harrold, Bev Hattersley and Shadd, as well as the staff of 310 West St. Peter’s, particularly Ashley, and RNs Donna & Elysia, who guided his last day. Visitation will be held at P.X DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 796 Upper Gage Ave., on Friday, June 8th from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Prayers will be said on Friday evening. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Margaret Mary Parish on Saturday, June 9th at 10am. Burial to take place at Resurrection Cemetery. Reception to follow in the Hearth Room at St. Margaret Mary. Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Good Shepherd Centers would be appreciated by the family. On-line condolences can be made to www.dermodys.com
