Obituary for Raymond O'Connor

Raymond O'Connor
O’Connor, Raymond Fergus

Having lived a very full life Ray passed away at the age of 92 in Hamilton with his wife Margaret (McCarten) at his side on February 26, 2018. He was pre-deceased by his first wife Bernice (Long), his parents John and Mary (Hurley) of Hamilton, siblings Frank, Jim, Tom and Leo of Michigan, Kathleen, Margaret Vince, John and Gerald of Hamilton, and granddaughter Alice Dietrich-O’Connor of Ottawa.

Loving father of John (Judy) of Waterloo ON; Michael (Melanie Scott) of Wakefield QC; Denise (Peter Rogers) of White Rock BC; Gary (Cathy Bristo) of Mississauga ON; Stephen of Toronto ON; and Kathy of London ON; Heather of Sault Sainte Marie ON; Phyllis of Huston TX. Beloved grandfather to Gordon, Andrew, Zachary (Devon), Sara, Frances, Evan, Mariel, Kevin (Lia), Graham (Kaelyn), Jessica (Marcus), Emma, Ryann and Marcel, Kayla, Riley, Tanner, Micah Zachary, Elisabeth, Anna, Ben and great grandfather to Alex, Ela, Darcy, Haydyn, William, Findley and Ella. Dear uncle and great uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.

Ray’s career as a travelling salesman for Mathews gave him the opportunity to travel all over Canada selling marking equipment to all kinds of businesses. As Ray would say, salesmen never die – they just go out of commission. In retirement, he indulged in his love for travel, visiting Alaska, Newfoundland, Italy, Zimbabwe, and Greece. He perfected his bridge game and frequented the Sackville Hill Seniors Centre where he often won. His card counting skills were also put to work in regular poker games with his friends, neighbours and fishing buddies.

Ray said frequently how much he appreciated his long and full life and how fortunate he was to have married Bernice and later Margaret. He will be remembered for his sense of humour and willingness to help out. His favourite query was “what can I do to help”. He credits his long life to not smoking and giving up drinking over 30 years ago.

Family will receive friends at P.X. Dermody Funeral Home, 796 Upper Gage Ave. (between Mohawk and Fennell) 5-8 PM Friday March 2, 2018. Prayers will be offered at 5:30 PM. Funeral Mass will be held at Regina Mundi Catholic Church, 631 Mohawk Road Hamilton, 9:30 AM Saturday March 3, 2018. Interment will be at the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Donations in lieu of flowers in Ray’s memory can be made to the Good Shepherd Center, Hamilton or a charity of your choice.
